Percival Proctor G-ALOK, 1960.
Comment 1

Derek Miles from Newmarket posted this comment on Saturday 18 July 2015 15:31:00.

Found this picture of G-ALOK on the internet. My father was part of the original 604 Sqdn Flying group that bought the aircraft from Vendair at Croydon. Having bought the aircraft the group then proceeded to fly the aircraft all over Europe using Croydon as their base until it closed down. I fle in the aircraft a few times as a child with my father we went to Jersey, Nice and Stuttgart on seperate occaisions. There were no navigational aids in the aircraft so all the navigation was carried out by dead reckoning. It was only after a couple of years did the aircraft aquire a vhf set which was crystal controlled. I always remember part of the flight planning was understanding which crystals were needed to provide vhf contact to the aerodromes on route. These were then scrounged or borrowed from other aircraft owners as was the norm in those days. I can only remember one instance where we were socked in by the weather and had to leave the aircraft at Lympe because it was too bad to get back to Croydon. The photograph you have shows the aircraft with the squadron markings (red & yellow) on the tail. She was a lovely aircraft but sadly due to the economics of running a wooden aircraft and her healthy appetite for oil she was replaced by a piper tripacer (G-ARCC)which was more cost efficient at the time.
