Just learned all about Merstham Tunnel's history of crimes on trains through research for my book on the murder of Florence Nightingale Shore, a god-daughter of Florence Nightingale. The inquest concluded that she was probably attacked in the Merstham Tunnel, after she was found with head injuries when the train stopped at Bexhill. She died 4 days later. No-one was ever charged with her murder, nor was the murder weapon ever found in spite of 3 police forces searching up and down the line.
